The Treasure of Health and Happiness
Carol's Chapter Book Order Form
From the author: The Treasure of Health and Happiness was created after visiting a third-grade class to talk about my Happy Feet, Happy Feet journal. The children requested the healthy message of Happy Feet in story form.
So when my publisher asked me to write a book of parent tips, I suggested a chapter book instead. "The children want a story," I told him.
That was when I created the story of Hannah and her dream adventure with a dog named Toby, a footprint map, and sparkling magic pencil. Then I sent Hannah on a quest through the land of health and happiness to find healthy treasures and much more.
Here is a modern-day tale for the whole family to read and enjoy together, chapter-by-chapter, while sitting around the fireplace.
Excerpt from Hannah's Dream
The breeze had stopped and the crows were nowhere in sight. For a moment, Hannah thought it was too quiet, but then the noisy chatter began. It was coming from above. Hannah looked up.
Each oak tree had a huge squirrel's nest way up at its tip-top. Hannah could see large squirrels busily at work. Some were running across branches. Others were climbing up and down the trees. Many were peeking out of their nests.
"The squirrels must be gathering acorns," Hannah told Toby. But as she got closer to the squirrels, Hannah realized that she was mistaken. The squirrels were carrying giant sparkly jewels of all colors.
"The squirrels must have found a pirate's treasure," said Hannah. "They must have our treasure."
Hannah knew that squirrels were not easy to deal with. They were clever thieves. She learned about them by watching the bird feeders she had made in second grade. It was a project from her teacher's healthy-snack unit. The kids were making healthy treats for birds. It took her all morning to make them. She had to cover 3 large pine cones with peanut butter. Then she carefully stuck sunflower seeds on every inch of the pine cones. Finally, she tied pretty red ribbons around the pine cones so she could hang them from a tree. She wanted to see little chickadees visiting her feeder.
I use my chapter book in my after-school Happy Feet, Healthy Food Kids' club. After exercise, we journal in the Happy Feet book, and then settle down to read a chapter of Treasure together. Printables are available for extended home activities. We call this a Treasure Literature Study. The children have a lot of enthusiasm toward completing these worksheets at home and returning them to me.

If you do read my book to or with a child, please send me feedback. I'd love to hear and also to print your thoughts.
